Entitat Metropolitana del Transport has been allocated authority for the following:

1. Ordering, managing, planning and co-ordinating public passenger transport services with regular and privately agreed routes within the eighteen municipalities. This includes the granting of concessions for regular services, the authorisation of privately agreed services and the concession and authorisation of passenger stations..
   
   
2. Provision of underground railway service in Barcelona and six other municipalities.
3. Acting as the administrative body in charge of taxi services.
4. Programming traffic on the basic road network and providing technical assistance to the municipalities in matters of urban traffic.
   
   

Area of Action:

By a resolution of the Consell Metropolitá dated April 28th 1988 Entitat Metropolitana del Transport established that public passenger transport services would be provided jointly in the area covered by its eighteen municipalities. This services is considered as urban transportation and is ordered and managed within the areas of authority indicated above.

Entitat Metropolitana del Transport funds public transport services in its area in several ways:

• The transport surcharge, governed by l’ordenança fiscal.
  
  
• A programme contract under which underground and bus services by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) are funded.
  
  
• The transferences of Mancomunitat de Municipis.
